The Third Day: Winter Music By Dickon Hinchliffe
Dickon Hinchliffe brings his experience as a classically trained violinist, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and award-winning composer to HBO and Sky’s The Third Day, a six-part limited series consisting of three separate but interconnected storylines taking place on the UK’s Osea Island. Split across “Summer,” “Autumn” and “Winter” segments, Hinchliffe scores the “Winter” installment, which stars Naomie Harris as Helen, a strong-willed outsider who comes to the island seeking answers, but whose arrival precipitates a fractious battle to decide its fate where the lines between fantasy and fact are distorted.
Mirroring the stark loneliness of the island and Helen’s experiences of loss and grief, Hinchliffe’s score begins with mostly solo instrumentation, echoing the character’s vulnerability in the new environment of Osea. As the show continues and Helen’s journey deepens, the music gradually builds with added instrumentation, the initial compositions intertwining with each other to reinforce the surrealist climax.
