The Third Day: Summer Music By Cristobal Tapia de Veer
Cristobal Tapia de Veer contributes his talents as an award-winning composer to HBO and Sky’s The Third Day, a six-part limited series consisting of three separate but interconnected storylines taking place on Osea Island. Split across “Summer,” “Autumn” and “Winter” segments, Tapia de Veer scores the “Summer” installment, which stars Jude Law as a man drawn to a mysterious island off the British coast. Isolated from the mainland, Sam is unable to leave the idyllic and dangerously enchanting world he has discovered, where the secretive rituals of its inhabitants prompt him to grapple with experiences of loss and trauma hidden in his past through the distorted lens of the present.
With its delicately lo-fi instrumentation and hazy ambience, Tapia de Veer’s score seeks to capture the dialogue between main character Sam and the island itself. Recording much of the score during long walks through the woods, Tapia de Veer says he, “wanted to capture a sense of being lost or isolated while increasing the feeling of connection to the woods and subconscious mind.” The resulting 35-track collection does just that, its ethereal soundscape mirroring Sam’s search for truth on the island, where the boundaries between fantasy and reality continue to fragment.
