The Lost Daughter Music By Dickon Hinchliffe

Maggie Gyllenhaal makes her directorial debut with Netflix‘s new psychological drama, The Lost Daughter. Starring Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley and Dakota Johnson, the film follows a college professor named Leda, alone on Summer vacation, as she becomes consumed with watching Nina, a young mother, and her daughter, Elena. Unnerved by their compelling relationship, (and their raucous and menacing extended family), Leda is overwhelmed by her own memories of the terror, confusion and intensity of early motherhood.

The seaside psychological drama features a timeless and atmospheric original score by Dickon Hinchliffe. Early in the filmmaking process, Gyllenhaal knew she wanted the film’s soundtrack to embody the vintage sound of a “found record”. When composing, Hinchliffe drew influences from film scores, jazz and popular music from the 1950’s and 60’s, and later recorded the score using vintage equipment and recording techniques at Abbey Road Studios to achieve a textured, analog sound. The lush, hypnotic sounds of the Hammond organ, sweeping string section and gentle piano provide a fully immersive sonic accompaniment to Leda’s constantly shifting psychological state as her memories become unravelled.

The Lost Daughter made its debut at the 78th Venice International Film Festival earlier this year, where Gyllenhaal won the Golden Osella Award for Best Screenplay, and will be released in theaters December 17 and on Netflix on December 31.
