Poor Things

Based on the novel by Alasdair Gray, Poor Things is a postmodern revision of Frankenstein. Brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist, a young woman runs off with a lawyer on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, she grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

Meticulously composed for Yorgos Lanthimos’s fantastical, highly anticipated film, composer Jerskin Fendrix’s harmonically rich, instrumental score lays the foundation for the protagonist Bella Baxter’s (portrayed by Emma Stone) inner metamorphosis. A prelude to an auditory world as unique as Lanthimos’s vision, the score captures the heart of a journey both surreal and profound, beginning with the gentle allure of harp plucks and escalating into a full-bodied orchestral crescendo.

Yorgos Lanthimos had never worked with a composer before, but was captivated by Jerskin Fendrix‘s diverse and unconventional approach to music, and together, they created a unique and immersive musical backdrop for the movie. Fendrix’s music, described by Lanthimos as “another character,” adds layers of depth and complexity to the film, often subverting or amplifying emotions in unexpected ways, making it a vital and distinctive element of the film. Fendrix’s approach to the soundtrack was inspired by the vivid, garish, and even childish aspects of the film’s world, resulting in a score that perfectly complements the characters and the unconventional narrative.
