A NOTE FROM DIRECTOR CRAIG MACNEIL ABOUT THE SCORE TO “THE BOY”

I take an unusual approach to building a film, starting with a concept for a soundscape, then translating those aural ideas into visual representations. Hauschka’s music was a huge inspiration for me during the The Boy’s development’s stage. Informing so much of the tone of the film as a whole. His unique sounds are rooted in the very fabric of the film.

THE BOY’s soundscape draws heavily from the environment, making use of the natural noises that haunt and define such spaces: wind, rain, creaking floor boards and the subtle, unmistakable groaning of ancient structures. The organic textures within Hauschka’s prepared pain accomplish much of this. From aluminium foil to ping pong balls, bottle caps to plastic necklaces, Hauschka inserts objects between or upon piano strings, hammers and dampers – the result transcends the line between sound and score.

This soundtrack takes a unique approach, as well. Rather than listing our film’s cues onto a track list, Hauschka has created a brand new piece of work inspired by the soundscape of THE BOY that stands on its own as a telling of our story in Hauschka’s unique sonic language. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
