Angel Olsen Covers Bob Dylan’s “One Too Many Mornings” for Apple TV+ Series Shining Girls
Angel Olsen has shared a gorgeous rendition of Bob Dylan’s “One Too Many Mornings” recorded for the new Apple TV+ series Shining Girls, starring and executive produced by Elisabeth Moss. Currently gearing up for next week’s release of her sixth studio album Big Time, Olsen was handpicked by Elisabeth Moss to record the cover, which features in the show’s finale episode set to air Friday, June 3. Olsen will be donating proceeds from her streaming royalties of “One Too Many Mornings” to the gun-control nonprofit Everytown for Gun Safety.
Produced by composer Claudia Sarne, “One Too Many Mornings” arrives alongside the full soundtrack, featuring Sarne’s atmospheric original score for the metaphysical thriller. Shining Girls marks Sarnes debut solo film score, after scoring several Film and TV series over the years with longtime collaborative partners Atticus Ross (to whom she is also married) and her brother-in-law Leopold Ross. Prior to her scoring career, Sarne began her career singing and writing songs with the band 12 Rounds, who were signed to Nothing / Interscope Records.
Of the Shining Girls score, Sarne commented “For the music of Shining Girls, we were aiming to create a sonic world that was both hypnotic and inviting, but that could also become unsettling and disturbing in a heartbeat. We started by recording sound bowls in nontraditional ways to form the basis of much of the sound beds in the show, and then put a number of felt-treated keyboards, muted bells, modular synths and looped percussion samples through different treatments to find a more unique sound. Some of the cues were written to reflect the cyclical nature of the show – the idea of a certain theme playing back on itself, changing and degrading as it repeats. I loved working with [executive producer] Silka Luisa, who encouraged me to keep the music muscular without sacrificing the more delicate aspects of the show’s musical palette.”
